Classical Music: not Just for Oaps

For too long, classical music has been regarded as the domain of instrumentalists, composers, academic musicologists and, typically, anyone over 40 years old. But while the majority of today’s youth would rather listen to Britney Spears’ greatest hits or watch My Chemical Romance on MTV, the view that young people are completely uninterested in classical music is not just erroneous – it’s simply not grounded in historical reality.

Mozart, widely regarded as one of the greatest classical composers of all time, wrote his first symphony at age eight and was dead by the age of 35. Schubert also died when he was 31, while Chopin famously didn’t live past the age of 39. Moreover, the phenomenon of the castrato in classical music in the 1700s shows that young people haven’t just been interested in classical music throughout the years – they’ve practically been canonised as part of a classical music tradition that, although lost, is not forgotten.

Today’s orchestras, choirs and opera houses are packed with young singers and musicians, many of whom are still in their twenties. Moreover, almost all modern, successful classical musicians will have undergone training from a very young age. Charlotte Church may have made headlines when she released her debut album “Voice of an Angel” in 1998 aged just thirteen, but while her phenomenal mainstream success was not typical, the fact that she was such a young musician in the classical industry was.

In the twenty-first century, the likes of Katherine Jenkins and “male soprano” Michael Maniaci, 28 and 29 years of age respectively, are making headlines the world over for their innovative approach to classical music and their stunning vocal range. Edward Gardner, the new Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour (one of the UK’s premier operatic fixtures), is also only 28, proving that there is certainly no dearth of young people performing classical music, although there may be fewer youths than OAPs listening to it.

But as classical music institutions and performing arts organisations try their best to reduce their median audience age, classical music isn’t just becoming more accessible to young people – it’s also becoming more affordable. Scottish Opera, for instance, offer special ticket deals for people under 26, while many music-specialist booksellers are making classical music books and guides that will help younger classical listeners learn more about the craft. So while many may lament the loss or decline of youth interest in classical music in today’s world, they need only look towards the country’s concert halls to see where the future lies.

Is Britney Spears stupid or does she just have idiots for fans?

Ok I reluctantly sat down to watch that Britney Spears documentary with a friend. My friend is in tears and I’m like “are you kidding me?” The b%tch is on tv complaining how she hates her life as a superstar and how she is so sad because she has no privacy. If it makes you so sad why the HELL do you keep doing it? She could be like that singer Sade who releases albums when she feels like it and stay out of the media spotlight by moving away from it. Britney lives in the heart of Paparazzi central! Didn’t anyone explain to her that she could move? You don’t walk into the heart of a fire and complain about getting burned! And this whole documentary thing…if she was genuinely trying to set the record straight about her breakdown why not release it when she didn’t have an album to promote? Why release it just before her album is about to drop? I guess it should make sense that she is good friends with Madonna who is one of the biggest media manipulators of all time. I think she is preying on the sympathies of VERY gullible fans and that is just wrong. Thoughts?
Rique I have a brain and the right to a point of view so yes, it is my place to judge if I feel like it. The evidence speaks for itself celebrities that live outside of LA are least likely to end up in tabloid publications. If she felt her fans deserve an explanation or she wants to open herself up why not make a homemade video and post it on your site so all your fans can see? If she genuinely hates the spotlight and wants to give something to her fans why sell her story to MTV and CBS? Why not keep it small and intimate? The only thing sad is that there are otherwise nice people buying this mess about a tragic pop star who hates the spotlight but can’t seem to stay out of it. Britney Spears is preying on compassion now THAT is a sad story.

and take the auto graph to a tattoo parlor (a good one)

and have them do a replica of it on some part of your body.

I was watching a preview of Greys Annatomy and I thought it was Britney!!!! Also when I saw that movie The Ugly Truth it was bugging me how much she looks like Britney.

Should I let my seven year old daughter do a nude photoshoot with a photographer that I just met?

Last week, a Hollywood photographer approached me about getting my daughter into Hollywood modeling and acting. I’d LOVE for my daughter to do this. she’s already done pagaents and everytone tells her that she is super cute. He said that he has photographed other child stars like Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus and Britney spears and that he got them to be famous on he disney channel. He said that my daughter’s would have to be a nude photoshoot, but that it would be taseful and classy.He said that those are the types of photos that the execs at the Disney channel are looking for, and that he would personally send them to Disney and hook her up with an agent. she would have a sheet on top of her chest and she would only be showing her bare butt. he said that he knwos a lot of hollywood producers and that he is personal frinds with stven spielberg. tomorrow, we are supposed to go to his studio apartment to do the photoshoot. does this sound legit? should i let my daughter do the nude photoshoot or should i refuse to let her do the naked pictures butlet her do a regular photoshoot. btw,he discovered us at one of her pagents. it was during the “miss Missouri little princess bikini pageant.”

my younger sister wants to be just like britney spears when she grows up, how do I talk her out of it?
